Just over a week ago, a team of twelve cyclists rode a charity ride in a concerted effort to raise funds for the children of ReACT Kenya. Under the leadership of Tim and Brenda Gordon, the team trained throughout the summer and sent the word out to friends, co-workers and family about sponsoring each rider. Saturday's ride of 50 miles (82 kms) was very wet and windy but Saturday's 25 mile ride was picture perfect. As a team, we are so encouraged not just because of the funds raised but also the real sense of community that surrounds this event in the last two years. This year, the number of riders grew as did the funds that were raised.
One of our goals was to raise $15,000 and to date, that number has come in at $15,467! Some of the organizers of this Centurion event are also connected to many other cycling events in Ontario and they commented that there are few teams that they are aware of that have raised this amount. We are incredibly grateful to our fellow riders and sponsors for the work they put into training for this ride and raising these funds. A very special thanks goes out to Tim and Brenda who have led this team and organized this event on behalf of ReACT. Their idea for this event and all the work invested into making this happen is changing not only the lives of the children of ReACT, but also ours as many are inspired by their vision.
To this cycling team "Chain ReACTion", we are humbled and grateful for all your efforts. To Tim, Brenda, Steve, Andrew, Shannon, Scott, Kathryn, Anna, Joseph, Kim, Phil and Ang we say thanks for this great season. A special thanks as well to Paolina Allan and Steve Fleck for your coaching and encouragement along the way. We are looking forward to September 2016 already!
Paolina Allan has been a constant encouragement and coach to many of us. Here she is with Tim, Joseph and Anna: Our C25 Team on a picture perfect day! Brenda, Scott and Kim... Joseph and Anna raced in the kids ride. Joseph place second overall and Anna was the first girl in. These are racers in the making!
For many of us, our sights have been set on both getting in shape through cycling as well as raising fund in support of ReACT Kenya. These goals all culminate this weekend for some of us who are anticipating this weekend's rides at Blue Mountain's Centurion Cycling Event. After months of training and fund raising we are now ready (or not!) to complete Saturday's 50 mile (84 km) or Sunday's 25 mile ride. To date, we are incredibly grateful to say that our team has raised well over $10,000 (many cheques have come in not reflected on our web site) that will go towards supporting the children of ReACT Kenya but there is still room to meet our goal. If anyone would like to contribute to our team's goal, you can still do so here. Last year's race had over 1,000 people at the starting line. Make it your goal to join us there this Saturday morning!
"What is that in your hand?"
This past weekend, our Ride for ReACT Cycling Team met at the Village at Blue Mountain for a practice ride of the 86 km ride/race we have all signed up for on September 18 and 19 of this year. The distance was challenging enough but with the addition of so much vertical feet to climb up and over the Niagara escarpment and back made most of us weary to say the least! Most of us were exhausted by the end as we nursed our spasming muscles but we all felt the thrill of meeting the challenge together as a Team.
On September 18 and 19 of this year, our Cycling Team "Chain ReACTion" will ride this same course with over 2,000 other riders in support of various causes. I am incredibly grateful and humbled to see this Team of 12 come together for our second annual ride in support of the children of Kenya through ReACT Kenya. Our partners and good friends Tim and Brenda Gordon have taken the lead once again for this Team and we are so thankful for everyone that is riding and getting in shape with purpose. We have a lofty goal of raising $20,000 Canadian for the work of ReACT (last year we raised over $14,000!) and we would love to reach out to anyone that would like to join our Team last minute! If you are a cyclist and would like to join our community of cyclists, it is not too late to join! Contact us to find out how. Like last year, we have custom Sugoi jerseys being made up specifically for the Team with an updated design and we would love to see you wearing one with us. (You can also make an on-line donation here as well.)
A little boys lunch was such an ordinary thing but its ordinary things in the hands of the Divine that brings change. God asked Moses once, "what is that in your hand?" and He took an ordinary walking stick to do something extraordinary. Whatever ordinary thing you find in your hands, bike or otherwise, may be exactly what the Divine chooses to use to do incredible things.
